Subways
are a kind of monument
of New Delhiin itself.
They are not a simple, safe under-pass provided to the citizens to cross busy
roads. But in fact they are architectural marvels. Depicting history of the
sites through pictures and murals placed on the walls, also in some subways
Indian mythology has been depicted through paintings. So far 15 subways have
been completed.
The first subway was dedicated to the
citizens in the year 1987 at near Ram
Manohar Lohia
Hospitalon Baba Kharak
Singh Marg.
The NDMC completed
15 subways. Some of them are, near INA market (Sri Aurobindo Marg), opposite
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib (Ashoka
Road), opposite Birla Mandir (Mandir Marg)
opposite Ram Manohar
Lohia Hospital
(Baba Kharak Singh Marg) near Regal
Building(Sansad Marg)
etc. Subways vary in shapes. The subway at Janpath is 'X' shaped with a
central hall 125 sq.mtr. areas and individual arms of varying length from 22
to 25 mtr. at the entry point to 6 mtr. with a clear headroom of 2.4 mtr. in
the arms and 2.8 mtr. in the central hall. Entry and exist is available on
all the four sides. It was built at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.5 crores.
